DEXA Body Scan Sunshine Coast

DEXA Body Scan

DEXA Body Scans

DEXA x-ray technology is the gold standard in body composition measurement. It is the only technology to precisely track changes in bone density, muscle mass, and body fat. A DEXA or DXA scan, generates a detailed report so accurate information can be used to generate individualized training programs. A DEXA report and information from the scan is so detailed it would be of interest to anyone who wants to know more about their health or longevity.

DEXA Scan

DXA / DEXA Body Composition Scan

A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the most accurate and reliable method for measuring body composition and bone density. It provides precise data on:

  • Muscle mass – to assess strength potential and monitor changes

  • Body fat percentage – including distribution patterns

  • Visceral fat – the fat stored around internal organs, which is a key indicator of chronic disease risk

  • Bone mineral density – to help detect osteoporosis or low bone mass early

Why Choose a DEXA Scan?
Unlike other methods, a DEXA scan delivers highly accurate, repeatable measurements that are invaluable for:
  • Tracking changes in muscle and fat with targeted diet or exercise programs

  • Monitoring bone density for osteoporosis prevention and management

  • Assessing the effectiveness of training, nutrition, or rehabilitation programs

  • Providing a clear, measurable baseline for health and fitness goals

Turning Data Into Action

Your results aren’t just numbers—they’re a roadmap to better health. We use your DEXA data to:

  • Pinpoint areas for improvement

  • Monitor progress over time

  • Adjust exercise and nutrition strategies to ensure you’re moving toward your goals

With a DEXA scan, you can see if your hard work is paying off, identify health risks early, and make informed decisions about your training, nutrition, and lifestyle.

How does a DEXA Scan work?

The scanner passes a small X-ray beams through the body. The rays are absorbed or pass through the body in known quantities. Different amount of the first beam will be absorbed by fat, muscle and bone. The DEXA machine's sensor can then determine the exact amount of fat, muscle and bone in each part of the body.

The amount of radiation from a DEXA scan is roughly equivalent to 2-3 day’s worth of typical exposure during daily living.

What Happens During a
DEXA Scan?

A DEXA Body Scan involves lying down for 7 minutes.

No metal should be worn so jewelry/watches or anything with metal in it should be removed. It is recommended that a sports bra is worn and to avoid wearing a bra with underwires/metal clips.

During the scan, the measuring arm will pass over your body in seven sweeps; gradually building a picture of you. It is important that you are very still while the scan is happening to ensure the best quality image.

After the scan, you will be provided with a multi-page report (example page below) and will be walked through some of the key points. Your technician can then provide some advise to you in order to work out an ideal training and nutrition plan.

How to Interpret DEXA Body Composition Scan Results?

  • A DEXA body composition scan provides a detailed analysis of your body’s composition, including bone density, fat mass, and lean muscle mass. Here’s how to interpret the results:

  • Fat Mass (%): The percentage of your body weight that is fat. A healthy range varies by age, gender, and fitness level. As compostion is influenced by muscle mass you also want to examine the Fat Mass Quantity relative to your height.

  • Lean Mass: Includes muscles, organs, and connective tissues. Higher lean mass typically correlates with better overall health and fitness. The functional lean mass of the arms and legs is important for healthy aging and longevity.

  • Bone Density: Measured as a T-score, it indicates your bone health and risk for conditions like osteoporosis.
Exercise Matters Clinicians can help you understand your results and recommend actions to improve your health.

What is a DEXA Body Composition Scan?

  • A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) body composition scan is a medical imaging test that measures body composition with high precision. Unlike basic scales or calipers, DEXA uses low-level X-rays to provide detailed insights into fat distribution, lean mass, and bone density. This makes it a popular choice for tracking fitness progress, managing weight loss, or diagnosing bone health issues.

Body Composition Scan vs. DEXA – What’s the Difference?

  • A body composition scan is a broad term that can include various methods like bioelectrical impedance, skinfold calipers, or hydrostatic weighing to measure fat, muscle, and bone composition.
A DEXA scan, on the other hand, is the gold standard for accuracy. It uses X-ray technology to precisely measure fat mass, lean mass, and bone density. While other methods are often less expensive, DEXA provides unparalleled precision and detailed breakdowns.

Can I have a DEXA scan with a Pacemaker or metal implants?

  • In short, yes. Metal will show up as dense bone on your scan. It will not influence muscle mass or body fat % data.

How frequently can I have a scan?

  • The optimum period for most people investigating body composition is 12 weeks. The optimum  period for bone density measurements in 12 months.

We provide DEXA scans for patients from Noosa, Gympie, Tewantin, Caloundra, Buderim, Nambour, Maroochydore and in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Our friendly staff can answer any questions you might have and also book an appointment for your scan today.
